Art Classroom Environment

Goals: Overall goal is to motivate students to express themselves visually and verbally through artistic methods while they build a foundation of art concepts through learning the Elements and Principles of Art. Simultaneously reinforcing core academic standards by making relevant integrated art/academic curriculum.

Curriculum: The art program is built to enrich the entire curriculum. At each grade level student will:

  • practice problem solving and critical thinking.

  • learn about world history and culture through art.

  • use visual, verbal and written methods to express abstract ideas and emotions.

  • learn concepts and techniques that will give them control of the visual images they produce.

  • learn to identify aesthetic qualities in a variety of artwork and in the environment.

  • learn the language of visual art so that they have a precise vocabulary in which to express their ideas.

  • learn about the vast opportunity of careers available in art related industries.

Assessment: Each child (1st-8th grades) will be evaluated on mastery of the Illinois Visual Art Standards and The National Visual Arts Standards. Grading will be through teacher observation, student art production and self response/evaluation.

Student Art Portfolios: Students will create a digital art portfolio where all their work can be assessed, reviewed and showcased.

Class Behavior Guidelines: To maintain a safe productive learning environment, art class guidelines have been established and reviewed in each class. Each child is expected to follow class guidelines so class time can be used for learning. Parents will be notified when their child has chronically disrupted the learning environment.

Incentives: I will use Tiger Paws and other rewards for students in all grades to help promote good behavior. This will encourage correct behavior in art class and help promote a great learning and fun environment.

Art class for your scholar will be an educational and enriching part of your child’s day. Please call me if you have any question at 708.862.6620 ext.120 or email me at cmcghee@l156.org. I am looking forward to a great year!
