Lesson 1: What's Cyberbullying

Students explore how it feels to be cyberbullied, how cyberbullying is similar to or different from in-person bullying, and learn strategies for handling cyberbullying when it arises.

Standards: 5.SL.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly

Learning Targets: I can recognize similarities and differences between in-person bullying and being mean. I can empathize with the targets of cyberbullying. I can identify strategies for dealing with cyberbullying and ways I can be an upstander for those being bullied.

Success Criteria: Students will discuss the differences between in-person bullying and being mean. Students will empathize with the targets of cyberbullying by reading a scenario and identify the target, bully, and any bystander or upstanders in the situation. Students will create an upstander card to help other students deal with cyberbullying.

Lesson 2: Digital Friendships

Students explore both the benefits and the risks of online-only friendships.

Standards: 5.SL.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly

Learning Targets: I can compare and contrast different kinds of online-only friendships. I can describe the benefits and risks of online-only friendships. I can describe how to respond to an online-only friend if the friend asks something that makes me uncomfortable.

Success Criteria: Students will analyze two scenarios and identify specific feelings of the main character. Then they will sort specific information into a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast online-only friendships. Students will describe ways to respond to an online-only friend if they are asked something that makes them uncomfortable.

Lesson 3: You Won't Believe This!
Students learn what clickbait is and how they can avoid it when online.

Learning Targets: I can define the curiosity gap and explain how clickbait uses the curiosity gap to get your attention. I can use strategies for avoiding clickbait.

Success Criteria: Students will discuss and define the meaning of the Curiosity Gap. Students will look at example headlines and use common clickbait clues to determine if they are clickbait or not. Students will use common clues to help avoid clickbait in the future.
