Exciting news from the MSB lab! 🎉
Our pharmacist-turned-engineer, Ryunosuke Sakai, has published his first doctoral paper—which also happens to be the lab's inaugural research publication! Congratulations to Ryunosuke and his collaborator Yifan on this outstanding achievement.
They present LOTUS, an open-source automated imaging platform for analyzing microbial biofilm and colony development. This accessible tool is designed to democratize biofilm research for budget-conscious laboratories and educational settings. The community will surely find other applications too.

A Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the MSB lab at Kyoto University
メリークリスマス!
The MSB lab held its annual research day with guests from Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical University and Osaka University. Thank you all for joining!
MSB lab students Ryunosuke and Mitsuki presented their latest research results at the 48th Annual Meeting of the Molecular Biology Society of Japan, held at Pacifico Yokahama, December 3–5.
Ryunosuke, our pharmacist turned lab-engineer, created a new, open-source gel-cutting trans-illuminator. Mitsuki tested it and suggested improvements. It's a very nice DIY science initiative! Maybe some of you would like to have it?
This week we said goodbye to Shiv, a summer intern who is returning to his native India to complete his studies after seven weeks at the MSB lab as part of the Amgen Scholars 2025 program. It was a pleasure to host such a motivated young researcher. Thank you for choosing MSB and our very best wishes for your continuing studies!
Today was Kyoto University's annual open campus. Two groups of High School students visited our lab. On that occasion, Jimmy Han, Mitsuki Suzuki, Yifan Zhao and Ryunosuke Sakai collaborated to design a new logo for our lab, which was printed using a 3D printer. They then presented them to the students who came to visit as a commemorative gift. It is a very nice design!
Today we hosted Dr. Munehiro Asally visiting from Warwick University in the UK. He gave a seminar titled "Electrophysiology of bacterial cells". Thank you for visiting us and for the fruitful interactions with our lab members!
Thsi week M. Robert presented at the joint Meeting of the Japan Society for Cell Biology and Japanese Society of Developmental Biologists in Nagoya, Japan.
