As ASEAN strives to become the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2030, science, technology, and innovation (STI) are key to achieving sustainable and inclusive growth. However, challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, natural disasters, and energy security risks threaten the region's progress.
To address these challenges, the ASEAN University Network (AUN), in partnership with the Japan ASEAN Science, Technology, and Innovation Platform (JASTIP) and AUN/SEED-Net, has launched the ASEAN-Japan STI Coordination Platform with support from the Japan ASEAN Integrated Fund (JAIF). This platform aims to:
● Empower the next generation of STI leaders, who act as research coordinators, to drive collaborative research and education. These leaders play a pivotal role in bridging gaps between institutions, facilitating partnerships, and ensuring effective knowledge and resource sharing.
● Strengthen institutional capacity and establish sustainable ASEAN-Japan partnerships to address regional and global challenges through innovation and cooperation.

The Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Coordination Training Workshop for the Next Generation of STI Coordinators 2025 — co-organised by the Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Platform (JASTIP), ASEAN University Network (AUN) and ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asian Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net) — was recently held from 28-30 May, 2025, building on from the recent STI Coordination Symposium in March, 2025 . The motive of the workshop was to bring together 20 nominated scholars and academics from JASTIP, AUN, and AUN/SEED-Net member institutions, all holding a diverse amount of expertise and focus across the field of science, technology and innovation, the chance to partake in a training workshop aimed at generating and implementing skills necessary to be research collaborators. This can in turn develop these academics into becoming potential future STI Coordinators, consequently being the bridge for the continuation of STI research into the next generation.
The Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Coordination Symposium was successfully held on March 3, 2025, at Crowne Plaza Bangkok Lumpini Park, bringing together 86 in-person participants, including ASEAN university leaders, research experts, and government officials, along with 133 online participants from various agencies. This event also welcomed distinguished representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat, the Embassy of Japan in Thailand, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Kyoto University.
Themed “Innovating Connections: Bridging ASEAN-Japan Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) for Transformative and Sustainable Solutions”, this event served as a platform for fostering stakeholder coordination, sharing experiences, and empowering next-generation of STI leaders to address grand challenges in sustainable development between Southeast Asian countries and Japan.
Participants learned the importance and key activities of awareness raising, capacity building, and knowledge sharing for ASEAN-Japan STI enhancement. They also heard from the experts on STI collaborative case studies, including the AUNSEED-Net supported project – Transregional Biofuels Collaboration for Sustainable Transportation (Transbio), the newly awarded JST e-Asia Joint Research Project—BioMove, and ENTEC’s flagship programs supporting the development of Thailand’s Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economic ecosystem. Participants also engaged in three panel discussions and shared experiences with the invited universities and institutions from Southeast Asia and Japan on what makes an effective STI coordinator, how to develop young-generation STI coordinator, as well as opportunities for future collaborative STI projects.
The STI Coordination Kick-Off Symposium 2025 was organized by the ASEAN University Network (AUN) in collaboration with the AUN/Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net), and the Japan – ASEAN Science, Technology, and Innovation Platform (JASTIP). In close collaboration with member universities, institutions, and potential partners, we are advancing key initiatives, including the selection of STI coordinators, capacity-building programs, and the creation of a knowledge-sharing database. These efforts aim to foster multidisciplinary research development and strengthen people-to-people exchanges between Southeast Asian countries and Japan.
