Purpose
1. Preserve, restore, and expand these rare grassland habitats
2. Educate and extend related environmental information
3. Provide a high-quality and diverse research site
The Black Oak Savanna site supports two types of globally rare grasslands: Tallgrass Prairie and Black Oak Savanna. Similar to forests and wetlands, tallgrass ecosystems are highly effective carbon sinks. Carbon sinks are natural areas that absorb large amounts of carbon (CO2) from the atmosphere and store it through a process known as carbon sequestration. The Black Oak Savanna site alone has an approximate carbon sequestering power of 91.8 metric tons of CO2 per year. Unlike forests, grassland ecosystems store carbon underground in their extensive root systems. When grasslands inevitably burn (through wildfire or controlled burning), the carbon remains safely stored below ground. Beyond carbon sequestration, grassland ecosystems support a vast number of rare and at-risk plant and animal species. Local biologist, Elder, and artist, Rick Beaver was instrumental in the preservation, conservation and restoration of what we now know as the Alderville Black Oak Savanna. The site is now the largest intact tract of native grassland habitat left within the Rice Lake Plains and Eastern Ontario and plays a key role in the future restoration of this unique eco-region by acting as a pristine source for native plants and seed.

The Ashburnham Memorial Stewardship Group (AMSG), was founded in June 2021 in order to advocate for positive changes to Ashburnham Memorial Park (AMP), known locally as “Armour Hill”. It is hoped that these changes will increase Stewardship and respect for the Historical and Environmental aspects of this Park (bird watching, hiking, astronomy, War Memorial Ceremonies, school visits, tourism etc) while decreasing the known negative behaviours that occur on the hill (speeding, reckless driving, breaking bottles, garbage dumping, illegal fireworks, etc.). AMSG is comprised of citizen volunteers who meet monthly to discuss issues and ideas for AMP and to liaise with City Councillors representing Ashburnham Ward on City Council. To date, the Arenas, Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, the Museum and Archives Advisory Committee and the Police Services Board have been very receptive to this information and to working with the AMSG towards positive change within Ashburnham Memorial Park.

Community Voices for Manoomin (CVFM) is a group of settlers, Indigenous people and community organizations who came together in 2018 to support Indigenous rights to tend, harvest and sustainably use manoomin (wild rice) in the Kawartha region. CVFM built on the earlier education and ally work of organizations such as Truth and Reconciliation Community Bobcaygeon, the Wild Rice Revitalization Network, and programs at Trent University, among others.
As a community group, we continue to learn about the history and ecological, economic, cultural, and spiritual significance of Manoomin, as well as the Indigenous rights and practices associated with this sacred plant. We are also helping to share this knowledge with other communities in our region. In doing so, we are finding that many residents are interested in learning more, and are finding ways to support Indigenous rights and uphold respectful Treaty responsibilities in this territory of the Michi Saagiig Nishinaabeg, the Williams Treaty and Treaty 20.

Curve Lake First Nation people are the Michi Saagig or Mississaugas of the great Anishinaabe (uhnishi-nahbe) nation. The name Anishinaabe is derived from an-ish-aw, meaning “without cause” or “spontaneous”, and the word in-au-a-we-se, meaning “human-body”. This translates to mean “spontaneous man”. The Anishinaabe did not have a written alphabet, but they did have a set of picture symbols or pictographs which were used to educate through stories. Traditional teachings have taught us that before contact we shared the land with the Odawa and Huron nations. We are the traditional people of the North shore of Lake Ontario and its tributaries; this has been Mississauga territory since time immemorial.
