เดิมในปี พ.ศ. 2510 การเรียนการสอนวิชาภาษาไทยดำเนินการอยู่ภายในภาควิชาภาษา คณะวิทยาศาสตร์และอักษรศาสตร์ ซึ่งต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2524 ได้โอนเข้าเป็นหน่วยงานในสังกัดคณะมนุษยศาสตร์ และได้รับอนุมัติจัดตั้งเป็นภาควิชาภาษาไทย เมื่อวันที่ 10 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2537 ทั้งนี้ภาควิชาภาษาไทยได้เปิดสอนรายวิชาในสาขาภาษาไทยในฐานะเป็นรายวิชาพื้นฐาน และเป็นวิชาเอกตามความต้องการของนิสิตในคณะตลอดมา โดยในปัจจุบันมีหลักสูตรทั้งหมด 4 หลักสูตร ดังนี้
ศิลปศาสตรบัณฑิต (ศศ.บ.) สาขาวิชาภาษาไทย
ศิลปศาสตรบัณฑิต (ศศ.บ.) สาขาวิชาภาษาไทยเพื่อการสื่อสารสำหรับชาวต่างประเทศ (หลักสูตรนานาชาติ)
ศิลปศาสตรมหาบัณฑิต (ศศ.ม.) สาขาวิชาภาษาไทย
ปรัชญาดุษฎีบัณฑิต (ปร.ด.) สาขาวิชาภาษาไทย
Beginning in 1967 the learning and teaching of Thai language was conducted within the language department of the faculties of science and arts. In 1981 this subsequently transferred into an institute affiliated with the faculty of humanities, and approval was received to establish the department of Thai language. On 10th October 1994, the Thai language program opened to teach Thai, both at beginner level and as a major subject in accordance with the needs of the students in the faculty at all times. Currently there are four courses as follows:
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Thai language
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Communicative Thai Language for Foreigners
Master of Arts (M.A.) in Thai language.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Thai language

The Department of Thai Language is a source of knowledge in all aspects of language with the aim to create academic and research excellence, and apply knowledge to various careers and cope with changes and cultural dynamics in the international context.

1.มุ่งผลิตบัณฑิตภาษาไทยที่มีความเป็นเลิศทางภาษาและสามารถประยุกต์ใช้ความรู้ทางภาษาไทยเพื่อประกอบอาชีพที่หลากหลายได้ทั้งในระดับชาติและนานาชาติ พร้อมเข้าสู่ตลาดแรงงานและสังคม
To produce Thai language graduates who are excellent in the language and able to apply the knowledge of Thai language to pursue careers both nationally and internationally and be ready to enter the labor market and society
2. สร้างงานวิจัยที่มีคุณภาพ เป็นที่ยอมรับให้เผยแพร่และตีพิมพ์ทั้งในระดับชาติและนานาชาติ เพื่อสร้างผลกระทบทางวิชาการและการพัฒนาประเทศ
To conduct quality research to be disseminated and published both nationally and internationally in order to create academic impact and national development
3. สร้างความร่วมมือทางวิชาการและวิจัยกับหน่วยงานและ/หรือบุคคลภายนอกมหาวิทยาลัย ทั้งระดับชาติและนานาชาติอย่างเป็นรูปธรรม
To build academic and research collaborations with organizations and/or people outside the university both nationally and internationally in a concrete way
4. ถ่ายทอดภาษาและวัฒนธรรมไทยสู่สากล เพื่อนำเสนอคุณค่าและพลวัตวัฒนธรรมในบริบทสังคมร่วมสมัย
To transmit Thai language and culture globally in order to present values and cultural dynamics in the glocalization context
5. พัฒนาระบบการบริหารจัดการทรัพยากรอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ เพื่อรองรับการเปลี่ยนแปลง รวมทั้งเพิ่มขีดความสามารถทางวิชาการและการแข่งขันโดยใช้ธรรมาภิบาล
To develop an efficient resource management system to support changes and increase academic capability and competition using good governance
6. พัฒนาทักษะและสร้างทักษะใหม่แก่สังคมและ/หรือศิษย์เก่าของภาควิชา เพื่อสร้างความเข้มแข็งให้แก่สังคมและชุมชน
To upskill and reskill for society and/or alumni of the department to strengthen society and community
