It is recommended for college applications that students ask a core teacher (English, Math, Social Studies, Science) or a teacher that is relevant to the field in which they want to major in. Students should only ask for the appropriate number of LOR's that the college is requesting. For example if the college is only asking for 1-2 LOR's that is what exactly should be requested and submitted. Typically, LOR's for college applications are requested and submitted by a teacher(s) and a counselor.
Essay:
Some colleges may incorporate a personal essay or give a prompt or list of prompts to choose from. The essay is a very important piece to the application that students need to spend some time on and incorporate the assistance of a teacher or professional family friend to review and give feedback on.
Some essay's give a minimum of word characters
Every junior was assigned to complete a personal essay already. We did two edits of it in class. Please get at least one more person who understands professional or academic writing to review your essay one more time and make edits. This can be Kumu Wilson or Ketra Arcas in the CRB.
Highly selective schools will also require additional essays.
Supplemental Pieces:
Art: Students who are majoring in art may need to submit in addition an art portfolio
View this website for ideas on getting started. However, be sure to check the specific schools website for portfolio directions
Music: Students who are majoring in music may need to audition as part of their application process
Types of Deadlines
Deadlines are super important. When applying to any college, scholarship, program or job application be cautious of deadlines and what items need to be turned in by that date and/or time. When requesting items to be submitted in addition to the application, be sure to request them 3-4 weeks prior to the deadline so that those items can be prepared in a timely manner. { Transcripts, Letter of Recommendation(s) }
Types of Applications
It is important to note that all applications online require you the student to create an account. Be sure to use an outside personal email that is professional to sign up. Keep your username and password in a safe place, and don't forget it. And while you are filling out sections be sure to use correct punctuations and capitalizations when needed. Be sure to also double check and triple check your application(s) prior to submission.
Fee Waivers
How do I qualify for a Fee Waiver:
KSM students who are verified on the KS financial aid qualifying list may receive a fee waiver for college applications and/or testing.
KSM students who also participate in federally funded programs such as EOC (Educational Opportunities Center), Upward Bound or GearUp may also qualify for fee waiver(s).
Students who attend college visits on campus or in person to respective campuses may also be granted a college application fee waiver by participating colleges and universities.
If you are applying to the UH system, there is a separate fee waiver form. Contact your college counselor for assistance with this.
