Kealakūlia Community Education is pleased to present this Summer Site to offer haumāna and their ʻohana opportunities to engage in authentic Hawaiian culture-based education.
On this site you can find a variety of interactive activities. Haumāna (students) are free to choose any topic they like, but we recommend they go through all of the sections in each activity.
These lessons--from learning how to make an ipu to discovering the values and customs of one's own kūpuna--have been designed to keep haumāna connected to ʻike kūpuna (ancestral experiences, insights, perspectives, knowledge, and practices), as a foundation for who they are and who they will become.
Below you will find descriptions of the various learning opportunities as well as some general tips for navigating this site.

Kalo is an important plant for our lāhui and it is from this plant that we get some of our favorite foods like poi, laulau and lūʻau stew. These online learning activities will teach you how to kilo (examine, observe, & predict) like a kalo farmer. You will be taken on a virtual huakaʻi to a loʻi kalo and will learn how farmers nurture the elements of a loʻi system to support the healthy growth of kalo. You will then use your new learnings to create your very own kalo growing system.
Moʻolelo is one way that kūpuna passed knowledge down through the generations. Through this level-up learning activity you'll understand the role ʻike kūpuna plays in our lives, how we can use it to strengthen our connections to self and culture, and how to use appropriate lawena when communicating with kūpuna.

Princess Pauahi was a leader whose vision shaped and impacted the lives of many students across the generations. These online learning activities will take you through a journey of her life where you'll learn who she was and the impact of her legacy. Through looking at Pauahi's life and the values she lived by, we will learn about aloha, our own values, and the legacy we want to leave behind. Lastly, through studying the ʻohana of Pauahi, we will learn about the value of moʻokū‘auhau, or the history of one's ancestors.
Have you ever looked at an ipu and wondered where it comes from or how to make one? These online learning activities will take you on a step-by-step journey through the process of making mea ipu for everyday use. Through watching a video from our kumu and through following the step-by-step instructions, you will learn how our kūpuna were innovative people who created various tools to make life easier. You will learn the many varying uses of the ipu, the importance of taking pride in your work, and how doing the work of our kūpuna enhances our own sense of belonging.
