Year 3
Curriculum
Autumn 1 - Learning Behaviours
Daily Reading sessions and phonics interventions begin
Children learn the expected behaviours for Destination Reading lessons
These include: partner work, group discussions and paired reading
Explore extracts from different texts including 'The Twits' and 'Matilda'
Levelled texts are also read for two days of the week.
Autumn 2 - Grandpa Bert
Grandma Gertie is rather strange with her big square glasses and a talking parrot on her hat. Anna and Kasper don't know what to make of her. But Grandma's got a secret ... Grandpa Bert is a ghost and he's travelled all the way from Barbados squished inside her handbag! ...
Children read text in daily Destination Reading lessons
Each week the lessons focus on a strategy- summarising, clarifying, predicting, inferring, asking questions, evaluating or making connections.
Based on reading levels, some children have small group phonics interventions during this time.
Spring 1 - A Faraway Tree Adventure
It’s Beth’s birthday, so everyone is delighted when the Land of Birthdays arrives at the top of the Faraway Tree. It’s time for the most magical party they’ve ever had!
The Magic Faraway Tree has been entertaining readers for more than 75 years. Now these colour short stories offer a great way for a whole host of new younger readers to discover the adventures of Silky, Moon-Face, the Saucepan Man and all of their friends in the Enchanted Wood.
Spring 2 - Hansel and Gretel
A beautiful edition of this classic retelling by master storyteller Michael Morpurgo, with glorious illustrations by Emma Chichester Clark.
No child ever forgets the story of the witch, the breadcrumb trail and the gingerbread house in the forest. Former Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo takes the Brothers Grimm classic to a new level, weaving from these themes a rich fairy-tale tapestry of hunger and hope, cruelty and courage.
Summer 1- Sam Wu is not Afraid of Ghosts
After an unfortunate (and very embarrassing) incident in the Space Museum, Sam goes on a mission to prove to the school bully, and all his friends, that he's not afraid of anything--just like the heroes on his favorite show, Space Blasters.
When it looks like his house is haunted, Sam gets the chance to prove how brave he can be.
Summer 2- George's Marvellous Medicine
George Kranky's Grandma is a miserable grouch. George really hates that horrid old witchy woman.
One Saturday morning, George is in charge of giving Grandma her medicine.
So-ho! Ah-ha! Ho-hum! George knows exactly what to do.
A magic medicine* it will be. One that will either cure her completely . . . or blow off the top of her head.
*WARNING: Do not try to make George's Marvellous Medicine yourselves at home. It could be dangerous. (blurb)
