UTK 2024 Tennessee Governor's School for the Sciences & Engineering (GSSE). This program provides exceptional opportunities for high-achieving rising juniors and seniors across Tennessee, and is hosted by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
The application for this program is now open! We are now taking online applications for the 2024 GSSE program. Counselors must initiate the GSSE application by nominating students they think would benefit from this program. Below are the details you'll need to help your students apply. Applications are due January 15, 2024.
What is the Governor's School for Science & Engineering?
GSSE is a 4-week on-campus program that provides the opportunity for advanced study, laboratory experience, research in modern science and mathematics, and an immersive college experience.
Academic Curriculum
All students take the common "STEM in the morning" classes and their choice of an additional STEM class suiting their interest. Learn more about GSSE curriculum on our academic curriculum website.
Who can apply?
GSSE is for rising high school juniors and seniors (current high school sophomores and juniors) who attend high school in Tennessee.
How many students are selected?
For the 2024 GSSE program, 75 students will be selected for a full scholarship position. A limited number of partial scholarship positions will be available to students not selected for one of the 75 full scholarship positions. GSSE funding supports housing, meals, instructional materials, and activities for full scholarship students. A portion of those costs will be covered for partial scholarship students.
How do I nominate a student for GSSE 2024?You can nominate a student by completing the Nominator Form. Once submitted, the student will receive an email with a link to complete their portion of the GSSE application. For detailed instructions on completing the 2024 GSSE application, please visit our website.

October 20, 2023-January 15, 2024: Accepting applications
January 15, 2024: Applications due
March 1, 2024: Students notified of status
June 2-June 29, 2024: GSSE program dates

PSAT PSAT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifier Test)
The PSAT/NMSQT exam will be delivered on October 25th for interested sophomores and juniors. The PSAT/NMSQT provides an opportunity for students to compete for national recognition and college scholarships. The cost for taking the exam is $20 and should be turned into the guidance office to Coach Davidson. Our College & Career counselor, Terry Sharp, will be providing more information to students regarding this opportunity. Volunteer Opportunity
Volunteer/Community Service Hours: One way to make sure you catch the attention of college admissions board members and make an impression is by showing that you have been actively involved in community service. If you haven’t already, consider volunteering time at a local animal shelter, local parks, libraries, Knoxville Zoo, and see Mr. Lambert or Ms. Hyatt in the library for opportunities here at Central High in the library or school clean up. Emerald Youth Foundation is always looking for volunteer tutors for younger students. Just reach out to organizations and then make sure to get documentation and signatures for hours completed. You may find this benefits you when applying to scholarships as well and community service hours are required for the TN Promise Scholarship. Young-Williams Animal Center is looking for volunteers. They would love to help students meet their volunteer/community service requirements and give them the opportunity to work with animals! They have long and short term volunteer opportunities available to anyone 16yrs and older. You can sign up on the website young-williams.org and will help each student keep track of their hours and progress. Matthew Verso is the Volunteer Coordinator at Young-Williams Animal Center.
