Water turbidity is the measurement of water clarity. The clearer it is, the lower the turbidity. Many ecosystems rely on the clarity of the water in order to benefit from the sun’s rays. With pollution, human impact, and other natural factors, the turbidity of water is increasing, resulting in the collapse of many ecosystems. We can measure the water turbidity with a device that shines light through the water and assess the amount of light that can be seen through the unclear water.
To build this code, you will need to select Advanced -> Extensions, then select “neopixel” (You may have to search for it in the toolbar). You will need to change the first block to say 30 instead of the default 24, as our LED strips have 30 LED’s along their length.
You will need the grove shields’ for both the LED strip to plug into, and the micro-bit. Plug your power supply (Battery pack) into the side of the shield (NOT the microbit).
Pair your Microbit to your iPad then download the code to it. Once you have a working device, measure the water turbidity by putting the end of the LED strip into turbid water and deciding the level of turbidity on a scale of 1 to 5.
