Service Learning is critically important in connecting boys to their communities. Knox Grammar Preparatory School's 'Total Fitness' model draws on current research on the impact of serving others, for both personal and social development. This Positive Education program aims to prepare our boys for the demands of a new workforce and think beyond their own needs.
During the presentation, we will outline the current Service Learning model and how this assists students in making deeper, more meaningful connections with members of the local and wider community. The presentation aligns with key dimensions of global competency and its implications for Service Learning. The presentation will also highlight specific initiatives that encourage commitment and agency, building a greater awareness of causes needing support and understanding the power of the boys’ voices in making the world a better place.
How can schools engage students in meaningful community service initiatives?
Participants will explore the elements of Knox Grammar School’s Service Learning model, where boys connect deeply to a cause and engage in meaningful initiatives, evolving over their years at the school; a long-term authentic commitment to making a difference in their world, understanding their role as global citizens.
By taking part in this workshop, participants will learn:
What are the elements of a long term, inclusive, student-driven service learning program?
How can we effectively engage all members of the school community, enabling students to lead and demonstrate agency?
How can we connect boys to global issues and encourage confidence in their ability to work towards solving these, whilst at school and in their lives beyond?
