Prospective students

How do I get to be a graduate student or research assistant in your group?

First, get an admission into Wright State University! I usually work with students from the department of CSE. I usually accept students I have already worked with so it is unlikely that you will receive a GRA position before joining WSU unless there are extenuating circumstances.

On rare occasions that I do hire without prior collaboration, I am looking for three main skills: strong writing ability, strong programming skills, prior research experience. The latter could include REUs, and publications are helpful but not required. Also, having experience in any of these areas is a strong plus: machine learning, natural language processing, signal processing, image processing.

Note: I have projects in all of these areas (use of ML with images, text, and wearables). While many of my projects are involved with healthcare, I have recently expanded my topics areas to those that align with topics that interest US air force. This affects my hiring as some of these may require citizenship or permanent residency.

My personal advising tactic: People often describe advisors on a scale from technical ("hands on") to managerial ("hands off"). I tend toward hands off. My students are usually highly motivated and I don't check on their day-to-day workings. I expect my advisees to be self-driven and capable of teaching themselves skills that their coursework cannot provide. I encourage my advisees to structure their own day-to-day activities, and we discuss short-term and long-term goals. on one-on-one meetings. We also have weekly lab meetings so all the students can see what everyone else is working on.
