Mongolia's Traditional Sports
The Naadam
The Naadam Festival, a very important event in Mongolia. It is famous for three traditional sports: wrestling, archery, and horse racing. These are known as the 'Three Manly Sports'. Naadam started long ago, during the time of Genghis Khan in the 13th century. Back then, it was a celebration for warriors to show their strength, skill, and bravery in these sports, which were useful in battles.
Mongolian wrestling, called bökh, is very popular. There are no weight divisions, so it's all about strength and technique. In archery, people try to hit faraway targets with bows. The horse races are special because young children, sometimes as young as five, race horses over long distances, up to 25 kilometers. The race is more about the horse's stamina than speed.
Today, Naadam is still a proud celebration of Mongolia’s history and culture, attracting many visitors from all over the world.
