Founded in 1960 as a key component of the long-term plan for the Calcutta Urban Agglomeration, the University of Kalyani has undergone significant evolution. Initially operating as a unitary institution with faculties in Arts, Science, Education, and Agriculture, it has grown to oversee 62 affiliated colleges in Nadia and Murshidabad districts. The 1970s witnessed a pivotal bifurcation, leading to the establishment of an independent Agricultural University. The subsequent decades brought transformative phases, with the introduction of new departments and disciplines like Biophysics, Biochemistry, Folklore, Library and Information Science, and Environmental Science. The university transitioned to an affiliating institution in 1998, expanding its reach to Nadia and Murshidabad districts, and the early 2000s saw the creation of the Faculty of Engineering, Technology, and Management, emphasizing diverse fields such as business administration, computer science, rural development, and visual arts. Recent years have witnessed further expansion, including the establishment of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, the introduction of new departments, and a foray into open and distance learning, showcasing the university's commitment to holistic education, research, and entrepreneurship development.
Kalyani enjoys seamless connectivity through both road and rail networks. Trains from Sealdah station in Kolkata to the University take a maximum of one and a half hours. Additionally, the university is accessible via the Kalyani expressway, enabling a car journey of approximately one hour and fifteen minutes from Kolkata airport to the the university campus.
