Achievements

The University of Kelaniya was awarded the prestigious Gold Award in the "Best Government Institution that Contributes to the Environment" category, represented by its Faculty of Computing and Technology (FCT), for its exceptional leadership towards environmental conservation and sustainability at the Presidential Environment Awards Ceremony 2025. Conducted by the Central Environmental Authority of the Ministry of Environment, the ceremony took place on 23rd October 2025 at the BMICH under the patronage of His Excellency President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. This top national honor reflects the University of Kelaniya’s commitment as Sri Lanka’s pioneering green university, highlighting its comprehensive implementation of green technologies, energy efficiency drives, and sustainable waste management systems across its institutions. 

The University of Kelaniya secured further national recognition by winning a Merit Award in the "Best Government Institution that Contributes to the Environment" category, represented by its Faculty of Medicine (FoM), at the Presidential Environment Awards Ceremony 2025. Held on 23rd October 2025 at the BMICH, this recognition acknowledges the University of Kelaniya's structured efforts to embed environmental stewardship into its medical education and healthcare operations. Through sustainable facility management, eco-friendly health research, and resource conservation protocols at its Ragama campus, the university continues to set a standard for environmental responsibility within higher education. 

The University of Kelaniya has solidified its standing as a premier green institution by securing an exceptional global rank of 189 out of 1,745 participating universities from 105 countries in the prestigious UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025. Locally, the university proudly claims the second place  in Sri Lanka with an impressive total score of 8,200 out of 10,000 points.

This outstanding achievement is anchored by our world-class Waste Management initiatives, where the university earned a near-perfect score of 1,775 out of 1,800 points (98.6%), alongside stellar performances in Water Conservation (93.8%) and Sustainability Education & Research (87.5%). See more 

The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is a ranking on green campus and environmental sustainability initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010. Through 39 indicators in 6 criteria, UI GreenMetric World University Rankings prudently determined the rankings by universities’ environmental commitment and initiatives.  See more
