The 20th International Conference on Knowledge, Information and Creativity Support Systems
December 3-5, Nagaoka City, Niigata, Japan
December 3-5, Nagaoka City, Niigata, Japan
Abstract:
Since 1993, I have been interested in combining groupware (as collaboration technology) and the KJ method* (as an idea generation method and creative problem-solving process model). In this talk, I will discuss my perspective on the KJ method from three viewpoints: creative techniques, the creative problem-solving process, and its potential in education and learning in the 21st century.
Firstly, I will discuss why the KJ method was a novel and representative creative technique that involves clustering and hypothesis generation, either within or beyond inductive qualitative methods. Secondly, I will discuss how the original KJ method, which includes fieldwork with two levels (thought and experience), was unique among problem-solving process, by comparing it with previous process. Finally, I will discuss the educational potential of the original KJ method with fieldwork in relation to 21st-century competencies (National Academies of Science, 2012).

Abstract:
This talk explores the use of artificial intelligence to support inclusive online public deliberation and enhance collective intelligence in diverse sociopolitical contexts. It draws on field studies and experiments with an online discussion platform employing an AI facilitator to structure contributions, foster engagement, and address participation imbalances. Comparative deployments in developed and developing countries illustrate differences in participant behavior under AI, human, and unguided facilitation. I will discuss a study conducted in Afghanistan, a context with pronounced ethnic divisions, where AI-guided interactions were used to encourage balanced participation and respectful dialogue. The talk highlights how thoughtfully designed conversational agents can serve as neutral mediators, enabling more inclusive, equitable, and constructive deliberation in heterogeneous groups, and considers the broader implications for social cohesion and the empowerment of marginalized participants.
