College Counselling in the DP
University of Calgary Visit:
This month, we had a visit from the University of Calgary, where Miss Sandra, the university representative, delivered an informative and inspiring session for our DP1 and DP2 students.
Students attended punctually and showed great enthusiasm throughout the presentation. The representative provided insights into the Canadian university system, including application procedures, programme selections, scholarship opportunities, and student life in Calgary. Many students, especially those considering Canada, asked thoughtful questions.
The visit broadened students’ understanding of international pathways and strengthened their readiness to make informed decisions about their future studies.
DP2 University/College - Parent Information Evening
On Wednesday 19th November, we held a Parents’ University/College Information Meeting. During this session, parents and guardians received guidance on university application requirements, key deadlines, associated costs, timelines for receiving offers, and the various resources available to support students throughout the application process. The meeting supported parents' in understanding their role in guiding and encouraging their children during this important stage.
I would like to thank all parents who attended the University/College Information Meeting and appreciate your continued support.
Best regards,

DP 1 CAS: Learning beyond the classroom
The DP1 Outdoor Education trip to Jinja offered an exceptional opportunity for our students to complete a Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) project while making a meaningful contribution to the local community.
This year, students stayed at 30 Wilson, using it as their base as they ventured out to engage with nearby communities through a series of hands-on activities promoting sustainability, creativity, and compassion.
Greening Communities, One Tree at a Time
The trip began with an environmental sustainability project at Wakitaka and Mafubira Health Centre II, where students planted 150 saplings, including a variety of fruit and shade trees. This initiative not only supported local reforestation efforts but also helped create greener, more inviting spaces for patients and staff at the health centres.
Inspiring Change at Highland Primary School
A major highlight of the trip was a visit to Highland Primary School in Kibibi, where our students took part in activities designed to foster collaboration, service, and creativity. They:
1. Painted a classroom block
2. Led an interactive presentation on menstrual hygiene for female learners
3. Created colourful and engaging learning aids, including visual posters for Mathematics and English
4. Taught Mathematics and English to Primary 5 and 6 pupils
These activities helped nurture empathy, leadership, and teamwork — key attributes of the IB learner profile.
From Fundraising to Fieldwork
This impactful project was the culmination of months of planning, teamwork, and creative fundraising. From long weekends spent baking and selling treats to car washes, movie nights, and Halloween poster sales, our DP1 students demonstrated remarkable initiative, dedication, and determination to turn their ideas into reality.
A Message of Gratitude
To the KISU community, we extend our heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support. Your encouragement and contributions made this project possible.
As we returned from Jinja, we did so with excitement, gratitude, and a profound sense of fulfilment — knowing that we had made a lasting impact on the community while growing as compassionate global citizens.
Thank you for helping us transform our CAS goals into meaningful action.

DP2 Collaborative Science Project - Cape Town, RSA.
From Sunday 2nd to Saturday 8th November, fifteen DP2 students, accompanied by Mr Grimshawe and Ms Tracy, took part in the Collaborative Science Project (CSP) in Cape Town, South Africa. Although our departing flight left on time, we experienced a nine-hour delay in Nairobi, which meant all students arrived in Cape Town feeling extremely tired!
During the trip, students visited the Zeitz MOCAA art gallery, where they learned about contemporary African artists, and the District Six Museum, gaining insights into the history of District Six and the impact of Apartheid in Cape Town. On Tuesday 4th, the group visited the University of Cape Town for a short admissions presentation. Later that day, they travelled to Blouberg Beach to carry out their Collaborative Science Project. Below this article, I have included a comprehensive presentation created by the DP2 students, explaining their CSP across the different science disciplines. This was recently shared with Year 11 and DP1 students during a Secondary Assembly.
On Wednesday 5th, we spent a full day exploring Cape Town, visiting Hout Bay, Boulders Beach, the Cape of Good Hope, and Cape Point. The students thoroughly enjoyed the adventure and sightseeing. On Thursday 6th, students enjoyed a thrilling toboggan ride in the morning. Later in the day, they spent time shopping and exploring the V&A Waterfront, giving them the opportunity to relax and purchase souvenirs from Cape Town. Overall, the trip was action packed, filled with memorable experiences, and I was incredibly pleased with the students’ collaborative efforts. Most importantly, their independence in formulating their CSP research questions, organising their equipment, and engaging in hands on scientific inquiry.
Below, I have also included a gallery of images from the trip! I am sure the students will remember this trip for years to come!
