January in Reception!
Our Reception children have been diligently working on enhancing their literacy skills. Recently, they were delighted to receive a visit from the Little Red Hen, who sought their assistance. This encounter ignited the children's curiosity, prompting them to pause and engage with half of the story. They eagerly read together, drew illustrations, and shared their predictions about what might happen next. Following this, they explored unfamiliar vocabulary, employing their newly acquired words in various contexts to deepen their understanding.
The children then focussed on describing and illustrating the story’s setting, as well as identifying and describing the characters within the story. Moving forward, the children will focus on retelling the story, and drawing their own story maps. This interactive approach not only fosters a love for reading but also nurtures essential comprehension skills, laying a robust foundation for their literacy development.

Messy Play – Going through the Mud
Our new story in our module ‘Talk for Writing’ is called ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.’ There are six main obstacles that the family has to go through in order to find the bear. We have been teaching the children that stories are always read from left to right, so they were fully aware that the third obstacle was going through the ‘mud.’ Thick, gooey mud!
We couldn’t go under it, we couldn’t go over it, so we HAD to go through it. This proved to be a wonderful sensory experience as the children splashed and sploshed in the thick, messy mud. We kept marching through the mud, singing ‘We’re going on a bear hunt, we’re gonna catch a big one!’ While we didn’t manage to catch any bear that day, we had a really good time.
Our little friends thoroughly enjoyed getting their feet dirty and muddy, and the soapy cleanup just added to the fun!

We’re going on a Bear Hunt
The children have been very intrigued by the new story that was introduced at the beginning of term. We decided that finding this elusive bear was a very important matter. The only catch was, every time the bear would turn around, all the little hunters would have to freeze. There were lots of singing and laughing as the children chanted ‘we’re going on a bear hunt, we’re gonna catch a big one’ – the giggles became louder as they tried their utmost to touch the bear, each and every time when the children were just close enough, the bear would turn around. The bear would tease, growl and make funny faces, but the children would reply, ‘we’re not scared’. Our lesson objective was to teach the children the rhythm of the story and make them aware of the word ‘hunt’ and how they could remember the story in sequence.

The wheels on the bus!
As our topic for Term 2 is Transport, we have been exploring all kinds of vehicles by looking for them and spotting them while walking around the school, and even getting on a real bus! The children were so excited to experience a short ride on the bus. Everyone was happily singing Wheels on the Bus. The next day, the children spotted a tractor and wanted to pretend to drive it. Why not? Everyone had a lovely day!

Friendship forever
We've been talking about kindness during PSHE, and it was amazing to see how our children absorb and implement what they learn. They've been reflecting on the quality naturally, supporting each other, and lending a hand to one another. It's absolutely heartwarming and impressive. The KG1 & KG2 team are so proud of each of you.
