At Kealakehe Intermediate School our media team produces a broadcast for our weekly Advisory program. Through media we share campus announcements, school news, and character based education lessons centered around HĀ.
Every month the broadcast focus's on helping us grasp a new HĀ outcome. On one of our broadcasts we conducted an activity on belonging. In this activity we gave each advisory a bowl made out of paper, and blank paper ice cream scoops. Everyone in each advisory class decorated their scoop, then wrote their name, ethnicities, and one fact about themselves, and put all the scoops in the bowl. This activity showed us that we are all different but that shouldn't divide us.
At our School Community Council (SCC) people from the community come in to share about our school. The committee includes teachers, students, parents, our principal, and community members. We confer on the good things about our school, as well as things we can improve upon.
When we engage with community members and students, it's important to ask for feedback because we can always do better.
SLC's are conferences that students lead, to get into the mindset, that we control our learning. In SLC's, students reflect on the work they have done by collecting work that their proud of and work they need to improve on. During the meeting with our parents and advisory teacher, students share the work they've collected.
In our SLC portfolio (guide) we have check-ins to see if we are supporting ourselves to get the best out of our learning. One of those checks on our total well-being, which is one of the HĀ outcomes. In this check-in we reflect on our physical and mental health, to make sure we are taking care of ourselves.
