Make up DAY

The reaction to this decision was diverse through students. Students have shown worries and excitement at the same time. Some of the students revealed their concerns about the Saturday makeup day. “The purpose of the make-up day is good, but considering that many students don't come to school for their reasons on Saturday, makeup day doesn't seem to be work, and I think we need to think about the original purpose of the makeup day carefully,” said Anna A., KISJ senior. The purpose of the makeup day was to supplement the absence of the school day. But the problem is since the make up day is at the weekend, many of the students did not make it to the school due to their reasons. These problems lead students to question the efficiency of the makeup day. “The main point of the makeup day blurred since it was on Saturday. I hope there might be a better idea for the makeup day.” said Luke K. (G9) Lynn K. (G12) added “It could have been avoided. I didn't see the point in having a makeup day because we didn't do much in class. I don’t think Saturday makeup school day is needed.”

Even though there is negative feedback about the makeup day, there is also positive feedback about the Saturday makeup school. “At first I was kind of annoyed that I had to go to school on Saturday, so I thought it was a terrible idea, but after I came to school and enjoyed my class time, it was fun to see my friends and the teacher during the weekend,” said Gina K., KISJ junior. Since the makeup day is a half day, the student did not feel exhausted after school. “Though it was Saturday school, we needed some time to follow back our schedule which was not conducted due to the typhoon.” Eric.K (G9) said. Some students were concerned about the fall behind schedule of the curriculum due to the inclement weather. Yujin L. (G12) added, “Saturday makeup school day was not as bad as I thought in the first time. Because it was a half day, it made me more excited. After school, I could also have time to hang out with my friends. Though the purpose of the school makeup day was not hanging out with friends, it was a good chance for once in a month.”

In spite of the concerns as well as the excitement of makeup days, KISJ HS head office announced that there would be another Saturday makeup school day in February of 2019. Since there were two absence days due to the inclement weather in August, the makeup day has been decided to be twice in a year of the KISJ curriculum. Students are hoping to have the best idea for the February makeup day. However, the date of the makeup and the determinations are not yet selected. Even so, the interest of high school students, as well as the faculty members, are gathering in the future decisions of schools.
