There has been tension between school teachers, especially vice-principal Ms. O’ Bryon, and KISJ female students regarding the uniform policy on skirt length from 2019 to now. Ms. O’ Bryon caught the girls more strictly by reinforcing the standards of skirt policy on the female
uniforms, such as giving them uniform violations even though girls did not shorten their skirts.
Before the policy changed, students could wear skirts that came up to their middle fingers when they stood still. However, after the policy is strengthened, the skirt cannot be repaired and must be under the knee line or line.
Various predictions were made as to why the policy was strengthened, and one of the reasons was the hidden camera incident. This is an incident in which male minorities secretly took pictures of girls' skirts and spread them to their SNS accounts, causing a lot of confusion in the school.
From this year, this tension had reached its climax as girls were frustrated with receiving a frequent uniform violation and complained the policy is unfair and subjective. More than 75% of girls had shared experiences of unreasonable regulations on skirt length words to words and wrote an article to express their opinion against the teachers.
“Reinforcing only girls’ uniforms just because boys looked at girls, I thought it was quite unfair. What should have been established was that boys should not do that”, female senior Janet said.
After the skirt policy that regulated the length of skirts was reinforced, there was students’ voice that the uniform policy had been strengthened due to hidden camera incidents. Later, the rumor became a fait accompli.
In response to the rumor, female students argue that it is inappropriate to regulate skirt length if male students are the wrongdoer. These regulations made female students appear like the fundamental cause and it seems like male students did not have any fault. Rather, girls claim that the school should respond that to prevent such events, they should teach the boys what is wrong.
Besides, male students also expressed hostility to these regulations:
“It is obviously very wrong to generalize all boys as having very evil intentions”, male senior Junho said. “Strictly regulating the skirt length for uniforms is not a good way to approach that issue”.
The third-party male students, since they are not directly included in tension, reaction to this rumor was not much different from a female students’ view. From the standpoint of a third-party student, they did not think that the skirt length regulation of the female victims was correct.
In response to these students' opinions, the school expressed its position:“The uniform is not based on one person’s action or another. Whether it is the jacket, or the pants, or the skirts, or the shirts, it’s the uniform policy for everyone” Vice Principal Ms. O’ Bryon said.
However, facts and students' voices were significantly different. The school claims that all students, regardless of these sexual crimes that happened before, need to meet the clear expectations written in the student guidebook. Also, as a generation that followed strict uniform regulations, parents and adults in the Korean education community expressed concern about the length of the skirt, which makes the school consider it as a major problem.
“It’s not just about skirt length, which is about school trying to control, in my opinion, too much on which clothing and how we are allowed to wear that type of clothing. For me, arbitrary regulations are building up and it kind of represents some areas in which our school is not as flexible as it could be”, Junho said.
Finally, boys state it should be approached not just by regulating skirt length, but by focusing on the school's excessive control of students, and that other regulations under excessive control should be found and resolved.
Ms. O’ Bryons had added some words regarding the tension with the students: “I am so sad people are feeling like they are getting caught”, Ms. O’ Bryon said. “I don’t want to catch anyone. I just want everybody to do what they are supposed to. Also, measuring the skirt with a ruler when you walk in a door, I feel like that’s not okay”.
Ms. O' Bryon that it's abuse for schools to line up students and measure their skirts one by one, and they're considering doing this to students. She said students who are uncomfortable wearing skirts or wear short skirts are recommended to buy these girls' pants. Since various perspectives and circumstances are surrounding these issues, it is very important not only to force individual arguments but also to understand each other’s perspectives and find consensus.
Overall, this article focuses on the rising tension between school and students regarding the school's skirt policy. This article gives important information to readers because even though the reinforced skirt policy issue had been raised for a long time, no one took the lead to solve the conflict between school and students. Nowadays, the tension between school and female students reached its climax since most teachers gave more strict standards on the uniform violation. Moreover, Mrs. O’ Bryon started to give out new uniforms or reform the skirt’s length for female students. Many KISJ students expressed concerns, commenting the action as “unfairness” and “ the abuse of executive power”. However, the school responded as they are helping students to meet expectations. To conclude, since various perspectives regarding skirt policy exist, it is important to reach a reasonable conclusion.
