The holiday that comes once a year that makes every student bold is Halloween. During Halloween, school usually throws a party, and everyone dresses up. However, this year due to the outbreak of Covid-19, the school decided to cancel the party. Since it was a day that many people were waiting for it, it gave both school faculties and students disappointments.
Mr. Harris who is the teacher of AP research suggested the idea of making Halloween a costume school day. This suggestion will solve the dissatisfaction of students and allow students to still have a Halloween vibe. By conducting an interview with Mr. Harris he said “I suggested Halloween day on the 30th because there was no Halloween party this year. It was a great example, of a crisis turned opportunity. Since it made the school day more festive, and it provided an opportunity for students to share their costumes with the whole of the HS body, as opposed to only the attendees of the yearly Halloween party (which usually attracts a reasonable number, but no more than 70% of the total). I hope that next year we get our party back, and I also hope that we continue a tradition where we could wear costumes on a Friday the week of Halloween, to foster and encourage student spirit and make school a fun place to be.” Hannah B. (G12, senior) who has experienced the actual party before had mentioned, “Halloween is an exciting holiday that brings a lot of people together. This Halloween, my friend and I wanted to dress up as something that was very intriguing; however, we were scared that we would be the only ones dressed up. So, in the end, we thought it would be a good idea to dress up as the Mean Girls characters since they have basic uniforms. Although we don’t have a party this year due to Covid-19, we are still able to dress up in school, which makes it really cool!” Moreover, she shared her new experience with Halloween that, “The process for the Halloween dress-up was very confusing. At first, we were thinking about dressing up as pirates or Mario and Luigi, but it was difficult to find good costumes for these outfits online. We ended up just buying things from the movie ‘Mean Girls’ since the movie has very basic clothes that we are able to wear outside of school as well.”
Halloween was a day full of fun and happiness. It was a time for everyone to get together and come up with costumes using their creativity. There were a lot of friend groups that came up with matching costumes and were able to take multiple pictures with each other. There were costumes such as the characters of ‘Money Heist’ or ‘Harry Potter’, and much more. It was a day that was very calming and honestly was a lot of fun due to the fact that it was different from all the other days we usually spend at school. After school especially, many of the students at KISJ were able to take pictures in the area downstairs with their friends who were all dressed up. Eric K. (G12) stated: “This year's Halloween day was the last year that I could experience the Halloween party with my classmates and friends, so I prepared a costume for the first and the last time. I wore a Marshmello helmet for my Halloween costume. My costume was a bit extraordinary because I believe that my costume was the only costume that had LED lights coming out. I could also see other students preparing fascinating costumes! Also, I took several pictures with other students and attended classes with my costume on. Overall, I really appreciated this year's Halloween costume party and had memorable experiences!” As we can see, many people said that they loved the halloween costume day and there was lots of positive vibe was going on.
This was a first-year throwing a Halloween costume day instead of the party due to Covid-19. Before the day actually came, many people were worried about the fact that they will be the only ones who will be wearing a costume. They had anxiety about wearing it during the school days and wondered if they were going to be the outlier. Thankfully, the majority of the students and even teachers wore fabulous costumes. Adding more, thanks to the STUCO members, students took amazing pictures in front of the photo zone. It will be hard to say the Halloween of 2020 was better than the previous parties however, it was definitely a time that was memorable, and able to get a restart from the heavy stress of academics.
