Dear Future Bookworm,
Hello, thank you for sharing your concern with me.
It must have been very stressful to read books while you find them boring. Since I also struggled with reading books in school, I have the best solution for you.
I think part of your resentment towards books is because you are “forced” to read books in English classes. As you know, when you spend time doing things that you are motivated to do, time flies. However, when you do things that you do not enjoy, you easily get bored.
My first advice is to find interest in books by reading short skits or fiction. When you find those fun, you might be able to expand your reading into different genres. Once you realize that readingis a another type of entertainment, it won’t be boring anymore.
My second piece of advice is to imagine the scene when you are reading books. Imagining the scene right off the text would allow you to be absorbed in the story because your imagination can get even more exciting than the book itself. I am pretty sure that you enjoy watching movies; once you perceive books as movies in your head, I am sure that you will enjoy reading.
These methods worked for me, but they might not work for everyone because we are all different. Try these, but don’t feel bad when they do not suit you. I hope you can find interest in reading books and impress your English teacher.
Once again, thank you for reaching out to me, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Signed,
Alya
