Information on making a request to attend an outside professional learning event
Check to see if the day is appropriate (e.g. not on Family Weekend or SLL week, a calendar is provided at the bottom of the page for your reference) and ensure you haven't missed the cut off - PD requests must be made at least three (3) weeks prior to the event to be considered. Advanced Degree course work that is specific to your job and/or roles here at KISJ is considered on a case-by-case basis. Work towards re-certification is generally denied.
PD allowance must be used within the contracted period and have at least 6 months remaining on the contract. In the event the employee is dismissed or resigns voluntarily prior to completion of full contract term, the employee will be required to return the PD money spent. The PD allowance cannot be used in the final 6 months of the employee’s contract.
Please identify the dates you would like to attend your requested PD. Again make sure that the dates you select do not conflict with important KISJ events.
Then, complete the Professional Development Application Form (see right).
When you submit your request, your division principal and the Director of Teaching and Learning will review your request. Wait for notification via email, by the Director of Teaching and Learning (usually within a week). Following approval, submit the Request for Leave, sub, or absence form, found on your respective division page on the intranet. Please remember that approval is based on several factors: professional growth needs, availability of substitutes, how early requests are made, etc.
You will need to pay for your professional development activity and submit receipts when you return (Step 5)
Refer to the Professional Learning Reflection and Reimbursement Section
A maximum of 3 days will be approved for any professional development request. Requests should be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to an event.
In the event employee is dismissed or resigns voluntarily prior to completion of full contract term, the teacher will be required to return the PD money spent.
The Professional Learning budget may not be used in the final 6 months of the employee’s contract.
PD funds will not be approved for IB trainings or for work towards re-certification.
All teachers who teach an AP class are required to attend an AP Summer Institute (APSI) either:
Once every four (4) years
When the course is redesigned
Prior to teaching the course if the teacher has not attended an APSI for that course in the past four (4) years
For AP teachers, APSIs are prioritized over Regional Conferences and External Individual Professional Development in regards to the allocation of available funds. Costs for APSIs will be provided from the AP teachers’ professional development fund. APSI requests will be reviewed on a case by case basis regarding the best date and location, as well as any additional funding that may be available from the school’s budget to support this requirement.
KISJ encourages teachers’ professional development through the completion of university courses leading to advanced degrees. Graduate tuition will be granted based on specific course work and its applicability to faculty role. Course syllabi and descriptions should be submitted to and approved by the DOTL in consultation with the divisional principal. Borrowing from future PD funds for graduate tuition reimbursement is not accommodated. Proof of successful course completion and receipts will be required.
