This is a short report (approximately 6-12 pages) written by the student based on a topic chosen by him or her, and it should focus on the mathematics of that particular area. The emphasis is on mathematical communication (including formulae, diagrams, graphs and so on), with accompanying commentary, good mathematical writing and thoughtful reflection.
Students should be able to explain all stages of their work in such a way that demonstrates clear understanding. It should be written in such a way that their peers would be able to follow it fairly easily. The report should include a detailed bibliography, and sources need to be referenced in line with the IB academic honesty policy. Direct quotes must be acknowledged.
Below is the rubric you will be scored on for the Math Exploration. We want to aim for 10-12 points. It is an independent math paper where students apply math they have learned in the course to real life situations and analyze their results. At least 1500 words. It can be written in first person.
The Math IA Proposal is in Google Classroom and due 1/27. You will present the summary section to the class Monday (1/30).
The rubric explain how each colored section earns you points for a total of 20 points.
Here are guided questions for each sections if you're feeling lost.
Criteria A
What is the topic/title of your exploration? What is the aim/purpose of your exploration?
Criteria E
What math do you plan on using? What are 3 math calculations you can show that are relevant to the math you will be using?
Criteria B
Give one example of a vocabulary word with definition, math notation/symbol and what it means, a formula and what the variables in the formula represent. What variable(s) will you use (from the variable brainstorming work)?
Criteria C
What is your connection to or interest in your topic? What challenges do you anticipate facing as you work through your exploration and how do you plan to overcome those challenges?
In google classroom you will see a Data Collection Template. This is due 2/7.
The Data Collection Spreadsheet is due 2/20 with all your data in it
In the template, only answer the guided question that apply to you (you're doing a survey, so answer the "Survey" section).
The Data Analysis Template is where you will record all you calculations and diagrams. There's lots of ways to accomplish this but if you want a guide I made one for you! Click on the button that describes the math you are using.
