About me
I have a degree in mathematics from St. Mary's University. I grew up on the south side of San Antonio and have lived here my whole life. this is my 6th year teaching at KIPP. When I'm not teaching I enjoy building and designing interiors of houses, hanging out with my kids, rollerskating, or rock climbing.
What is modern classroom?
It is a way to learn at your own pace. It blends instruction so students can mastery content at their own pace to make sure they are truly understanding the content. You will learn the foundation math skills from video lessons I create then come to class ready to engage in practice, discussions, and projects.
IB Grading Scale
In an IB class, scoring a 4 or higher usually results in college credit. Meaning you will leave from high school having a math class already done in college! This helps you save hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars.
Mathematical Exploration
For your Mathematics Internal Assessment, you have to complete a Mathematical Exploration on a topic of your choice. This is a chance for you to explore an area of mathematics that interests you! It is a piece of written work that is graded out of 20 marks in total and contributes to 20% of your total IB grade. This will be started once we come back from winter break.
Every unit will have a tracker like the one above. You will use this to track your progress through the unit. It goes in your classroom notebook. we also have whole class trackers like shown below. Mcdougal will post these daily so you can check your unit progress. If you are "On Pace" it means that you are where you should be in order to turn everything in on time. If it says "Behind" you missed a lesson deadline and need to catch up. " If it says "Ahead" you are ahead of schedule and may be put as a Star Student.
We will use our classroom notebooks everyday. You are responsible for keeping your journal up to date including the table of contents, page numbers, guided notes, practice problems, and unit trackers filled out. I will always have my class journal available if you are absent and need to see how to set up the pages for the day you missed.
If you turned in a mastery check and it needs to be revised, you must first show McDougal your notebook and the guided notes need to be completed. If this was completed I will assign you practice problem, small group instructions, or 1 on 1 tutoring that will need to be completed before you retry the mastery check.
