Obituary

DAVIDSON.- On the 10th January, at Penneshaw. Hog Bay, Kangaroo Island, Hannah, relict of the late Robert Davidson, in her 83rd year, leaving 2 sons and 3 daughters to mourn their loss. Arrived in the Odessa [sic], 1839 [sic]. A colonist of 67 years.

About CHARLESWORTH, Hannah

The fourth of ten children of Richard Charlesworth and Elizabeth, nee Ashton.

Her first husband (whom she married at 14) disappeared, presumably to Jamaica. It’s unclear exactly what Hannah’s position was but one can imagine that it would have been very difficult; there was no way of knowing what had become of him and she was left with no means of support and no proof that James had drowned, allowing her to re-marry. As with many women in the same situation, housekeeping would have been the only job where she could keep her children.

One of her descendants says she became a housekeeper to Friederich Christoph Ebert, who was a missionary, and went to Kangaroo Island with him. Another descendant says they went as managers of property at Hog Bay River, the present day Willson River.

Whatever the situation, their relationship obviously changed and they were married on the 12th of January 1858 and had five children. All told Hannah was responsible for the care of 16 children so she had quite an effect on the Penneshaw community.
