Third Class had to design the tallest unsupported structure using marshmallows and spaghetti.
Third Class were making rockets and experimenting with their fins and any other conditions conducive to travelling the furthest distance.
Children in 6th Class also created paper rockets during Space Week!
Nebulae and Star Formation
For Space Seek we learned about nebulae and star formation. The children examined a variety of difference shapes of nebulae and then designed their own individual nebula using sponge painting.
First class created a paper stand and balanced their elves on the shelf
To create the stand, the children cut the line at the top of the template, and folded it on the dotted lines. They then glued one short edge to the other, to create a triangle-like shape. Next the children stuck one side of the stand to the elf’s back.
First class used marshmallows and cocktail sticks to create 3-D shapes. They investigated how they could make these stronger, for example using a couple of cocktail sticks between the marshmallows.
Second Class has a competition to make the tallest structure using spaghetti and marshmallows!
Third class had a design and make challenge for Engineering Week. They had to design and make a tinfoil boat to hold the greatest amount of cubes.
Civil Engineering - Save Chicken Licken
Children designed and constructed a structure that could protect their chosen animal from 'the sky falling down'. Once their structures were created we tested them by dropping a large marble that represented the acorn from the story on them. Children had to record the process on Seesaw using ipads.
Biomedical Engineers - Planting Cress
Planted cress seeds in cotton wool. Did one sample that will not be watered and placed in a cupboard to compare the effects.
Chemical Engineering - Mummifying Apples
Examining desiccants (salt and baking soda) to preserve or mummify apples.
The children in First Class were given paper and wooden blocks to build bridges. We watched videos and looked at photos of different bridges from around the world. The children tested the strength of their bridges by seeing how many coins they could hold.
Junior Infants had to build bridges to get the farm animals across safely! They had help from children in Third Class.
Children constructed paper planes and then flew them to see how far they would travel!
20230308_140314.mp4Second class enjoyed some tall tower construction during Engineers Week.
Buildings in our locality
Children in Fifth Class explored buildings in their locality and made models of them.
Children in Second Class made air powered cars!
Children in Sixth Class designed and built Lego robots during Engineers Week! Lots of budding engineers.
5th class worked with Junior Infants during Engineering Week to build and design famous buildings around the world.
5th Class designed paper boats to float on water. They estimated how many unifix cubes could be placed in the boat without them sinking. They investigated how some people's designs allowed the boats to hold more or less cubes than others.
