Welcome to fourth grade. Fourth grade is an important developmental year. Your 4th grader's cognitive and creative skills will be stimulated to grow socially and academically.
Fourth-grade math builds upon foundational skills while introducing more complex concepts. Students will develop a deeper understanding of fractions by learning to compare, add, and subtract fractions, as well as identify equivalent and non-equivalent fractions.
Students will also learn how to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data using charts, graphs, and tables. In addition, they will explore measurement concepts by converting between different units and solving real-world problems involving length, weight, volume, and time.
Throughout the year, students will strengthen their problem-solving, reasoning, and mathematical thinking skills as they apply what they learn to a variety of situations.
Fourth-grade writing will include a wide variety of genres and purposes. Students will develop their narrative writing skills by creating engaging stories that include dialogue, descriptive details, and well-developed characters and events.
In reading, students will explore a variety of genres and be introduced to diverse characters, settings, and themes. A strong emphasis will be placed on nonfiction texts as students learn to gather information, analyze ideas, and support their thinking with evidence. Poetry will also be incorporated throughout the year, allowing students to explore language, rhythm, and figurative meaning.
Vocabulary instruction will continue to expand as students study prefixes, suffixes, and word patterns to strengthen their phonological awareness and word analysis skills. Through reading, writing, and discussion, students will learn new vocabulary while developing a deeper understanding of how to effectively use words they already know.
