Spelling instruction in our classroom is grounded in research-based practices from UFLI and LETRS phonics. Rather than memorizing long lists of unrelated words, students focus on understanding spelling patterns and phonics rules that help them become stronger readers and writers.
Each spelling list includes 10 “must-know” words that students are expected to master. On spelling tests, students will also be given 5 additional words chosen from a list of 10. These words are designed to assess how well students understand and can apply the spelling rule or pattern we have been learning—not just memorize words.
Spelling lists typically last 1–2 weeks, allowing students time to practice, apply, and truly learn each pattern. This approach helps build confidence and supports long-term spelling success.
