Research members explore science.
Wetlab members perform experiments at Biocurious, in Santa Clara.
Drylab members use computational biology tools and data science to add to the project's research findings.
Human Practices is not experimenting on humans. Human practices is community outreach.
Expert outreach is finding, reaching out to, and integrating the advice of relevant experts. For example, in 2025 our team reached out to Brenda Goeden for advice on how to use our biomineralized material.
See the 2025 IHP page for more examples.
Education is visiting other communities, usually schools, to provide synthetic biology education. For example, visiting a school to explain the central dogma and running a DNA extraction workshop.
Wiki members build a documentation website, describing everything the team did during the season. The website is hosted on iGEM's gitlab servers and coded using HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap. The website must be coded from scratch, with no backend. Additionally, all files, including images, must be uploaded so they are hosted on iGEM servers.
iGEM requires teams to produce two videos: the project promotion video and the project presentation video.
The project promotion video is a flashy 2 minute video advertising your team's project.
The project presentation video is a 15 minute video that describes your team's project and efforts in greater detail.
Fundraising members apply to grants and request donations.
Social media members control social media accounts and posts, such as Instagram.
