Pick 3 words to segment into sounds (phonemes).
Pick 3 words to blend together so your child can guess the word.
2
Select 1 word.
For the word "can" say, "my word has 3 sounds. The sounds are c/ /ǎ/ /n/." What is my word?
"Finger stretch" the sounds as you say them out loud.
Repeat this with 2 more words.
Start with words that have 2 sounds and move to more sounds as your child progresses.
3
Remember to celebrate with your child and keep this fun. You might say, "Great! You recognized the word!"
If they don’t get it right, take a minute to celebrate that they tried, and then give them corrective feedback. You might say...
"I like how you hear the beginning and the ending sound, but what's the middle sound?"
"Now let's try the word all together."
