TIP: You don’t need to ask every question every time! Choose 1–2 per strategy to keep reading fun and low-stress. Your child’s answers help you see how well they understand—and build confidence over time.
Ask these before or during reading...
“What do you think will happen next?”
“What makes you think that?”
“What clues in the pictures or words helped you guess?”
“How do you think the story will end?”
“What do you think this character will do now?”
“Have you ever read a book like this before? What happened then?”
Ask these during or after reading...
“What do you see in your mind right now?”
“If you could draw a picture of this part, what would it look like?”
“What does the setting or place look like to you?”
“Can you imagine what the character looks like? What are they wearing or doing?”
“What sounds do you hear in this part of the story?”
“Can you smell or feel anything from the scene the author described?”
Ask these before, during, or after reading...
“What are you wondering about right now?”
“Why do you think that happened?”
“What do you think the character is thinking or feeling?”
“Is there anything that’s confusing or that doesn’t make sense?”
“What questions do you still have after finishing the story?”
“Did anything surprise you?”
“What would you ask the author or the main character if you could?”
Ask these after reading...
“What was this story mostly about?”
“Can you tell me what happened at the beginning, middle, and end?”
“What was the problem, and how did it get solved?”
“What were the most important parts?”
“If you had to tell a friend what this story was about in a few sentences, what would you say?”
“What lesson did the character learn?”
