Antecedent Strategies

Antecedent Strategies are interventions staff will do prior to behavior. These strategies are a redesign of the environment and serve the purpose of decreasing motivation to demonstrate problem behavior in order to avoid tangibles or activities.

• Start by considering what is aversive about the activity and attempt to mitigate

  • Too hard, too easy, too boring?

• Accommodate work to make it less difficult

  • Think Assistive Technology resources

• Offer choice to work tasks/materials (before problem behavior, not after as choice can be more challenging for an escalated individual)

• Provide non-contingent escape

• Remind the student to engage in the replacement behavior to request removal or avoidance of the activity
