Antecedent Strategies are interventions staff will do prior to behavior. These strategies are a redesign of the environment and serve the purpose of decreasing motivation to demonstrate problem behavior in order to avoid tangibles or activities.
Start by considering what is aversive about the activity and attempt to mitigate
Too hard, too easy, too boring?
Accommodate work to make it less difficult
Think Assistive Technology resources
Offer choice to work tasks/materials (before problem behavior, not after as choice can be more challenging for an escalated individual)
Provide non-contingent escape
Remind the student to engage in the replacement behavior to request removal or avoidance of the activity
