Where advocates come together for a safer internet through awareness of issues focusing on safety, information literacy, and technology use.
In the U.S., there is lax regulation and oversight ensuring children can access age-appropriate resources without their information being shared, a long history of corporations skirting the law, and little standards for ensuring educational content in digital media (Gasparis, 2019). As a result, it is incumbent on educators and caregivers to protect youth and equip them to make smart decisions when using online media.
Click the buttons below to view sample actions for various age groups that can be incorporated into lessons, programs, or practice. Each action was developed or included to empower library staff to become more well-rounded and astute media mentors and impart awareness to their communities of users. We understand that through awareness of how media practices take shape in our community’s daily lives, and how quality mentorship supports this in and out of institutional settings, library staff can manipulate and harness the positive benefits of the internet and digital technology (ALSC, 2015).
