Principal Investigator
Dr. Phillip Hamrick is the Principal Investigator of the Memory and Language Lab (MALL) and is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Kent State University. He has conducted behavioral, computational, and electrophysiological studies on the specific roles of general learning and memory mechanisms, especially those linked to episodic memory and semantic memory (often know as the declarative memory system), in language acquisition and processing.
His research appears in journals on language (Language Learning, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Bilingualism: Language & Cognition, Applied Corpus Linguistics, The Mental Lexicon), psychology (Applied Cognitive Psychology, Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology, Learning and Individual Differences), aging and cognition (Aging, Neuropsychology, and Cognition), and general science (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences).
Outside of academe, Dr. Hamrick is in two bands: Harmony Star and The Skoolies. He also regularly practices Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and submission grappling.

Katelyn McClure is a GA of the Memory and Language Lab (MALL) and is a graduate student of the Ph.D. Cognitive Psychological Sciences program in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Kent State University. Her research interests include foreign-accented speech on language and learning processing. She currently has two co-author publications (Proceedings of the 2020 Pedagogicon, Psicología Educativa) and one first author publication (Proceedings of the 2022 Pedagogicon).
Outside of academe, Katelyn enjoys reading, playing video games, and hanging out with her two cats.
Current Undergraduate Research Assistants
Kay Budrovic is an undergraduate student in the Kent State Department of Psychological Sciences working towards a Bacholer of Science in Psychology, with a concentration in child psychology. Kay also works as a RA in the Memory and Language Lab and has since spring of 2024, taking a small hiatus in fall 2024, but coming back strong in spring 2025 with full intention to stay until graduation in spring 2026. They are currently in the process of writing an Honors Thesis alongside Dr. Hamrick involving collocations in spontaneous speech in individuals with Alzheimer's Disease. On campus, you may also see Kay around as a Tour Guide.
Outside of the classroom, Kay enjoys the Sims 4, theatre but not in the bad way, and playing badminton poorly in the KSU Student Recreation and Wellness Center.
