書物は筆写、活版印刷、装飾、製本など、さまざまな技術と文化が交叉する場であり、その制作工程や読者による使用の痕跡について豊かな手がかりを与えてくれます。この手がかりを「データ」と捉えることができるでしょう。書誌学者や美術史研究者は、写本や初期刊本の現物から、あるいはデジタル画像から、どのようなプロセスでどのような「データ」を読み取り、研究に活用しているのでしょうか。本シンポジウムでは、この方法論的な問いに焦点を当てます。ヨーロッパ初期刊本研究の大家であるプリンストン大学図書館のEric White博士と、中世スペインおよび周辺地域における図像の役割の研究で知られるプリンストン大学のPamela Patton博士をお招きし、具体的な研究プロセスとデータ活用についてご講演いただきます。さらに、初期印刷本の印刷や装飾の研究に取り組む研究者たちによる事例発表を交えながら、書物研究の最前線で「データ」がどのように活用されているのかを多角的に検討します。休憩時間には関連ファクシミリの小展示を行います。書物研究の具体的な方法論や研究プロセスにおけるデータの扱いにご関心がある方は、ぜひご参加ください。

Books are material objects where various technologies and cultures intersect, including handwriting, typography, decoration, and binding. They provide rich clues regarding their production processes and the traces of reader use. These clues can be understood as "data." How do bibliographers and art historians read and utilize this "data" in their research? What processes do they employ when examining original manuscripts and early printed books, or their digital surrogates? This symposium will focus on these methodological questions. We are honored to welcome Dr. Eric White (Princeton University Library), a leading scholar of early European printed books, and Dr. Pamela Patton (Princeton University), renowned for her research on the role of images in medieval Spain and the surrounding regions. They will present their specific research processes and data utilization methods. Furthermore, case studies will be presented by researchers working on the printing and decoration of early printed books. Together, we will engage in a multi-faceted examination of how "data" is being utilized on the front lines of book studies. During the break, we will hold a mini exhibition of related facsimiles. We invite all those interested in the concrete methodologies of book studies and the handling of data in the research process to attend.
