For details, please ask at the local city/ward office directly.
The monthly premiums for the NHI vary slightly by city.
Up to 70% reduction may be applied to international students who did not have any income in Japan during the previous year.
The reduced premium will be around 1,500 yen per month.
Be sure to request for reduction at the time of registration. For the exact amount of the premium and payment method, please ask for more information at the NHI counter.
If you do not join the NHI, the medical cost in Japana will be very high.
Please note that Keio does NOT cover any medical expenses for students.
All registered residents of Japan aged over 20 must enroll for the National Pension. However, international students staying for less than a year with no income in Japan during the previous year may apply for an exemption.

Your payments are supposed to be waived if you did not have any income in Japan the previous year (as stated above). Therefore, please visit the ward office and explain your situation.
