Grading Policy: Competency Based Education (CBE)
While important to the learning process, practice (homework), work completion, participation, extra credit, and effort are not included in the calculation of content competency-based grades.
The final score of each learning target is calculated using the mode of up to the most recent three assessments to emphasize a student’s progression of growth and learning over time. A final grade for each competency is the average of the learning targets. However, to be considered as demonstrating competency, a student must earn a two or higher on each learning target. To be considered passing a course, students must demonstrate a two or higher on each competency. There are no overall course grades or GPA. For more information on our grading policy please see the Kearsarge Regional Middle School website at www.kearsarge.org/middle-school.
CBE Grades
4 - The student actively builds new knowledge, transfers skills, and expands their thinking in new and novel contexts. (Think going above and beyond what is expected regularly, demonstrating need for more challenging topics or opportunities to apply skills above and beyond expectations)
3 - The student applies learned knowledge and skills in a variety of familiar contexts. (Think- right where they should be in relation to content being taught)
2 - The student is beginning to apply learned knowledge and skills in limited familiar contexts. (Think-working hard and making progress towards competency)
1 - The student is beginning to develop a basic understanding of the knowledge and skills. (Think-working hard to make progress but less than expected progress being made, may need extra support)
NE - No Evidence - The student has not demonstrated sufficient evidence of learning to receive feedback.
IN - Incomplete - The student has been given extended time to demonstrate their learning due to excused reasons.
Homework Policy:
Any classwork not finished during class time becomes homework due the next class time.
The purpose of homework is to practice what we did in class and sometimes to review prior knowledge. I try to give no more than 45 minutes of math homework when it is assigned. If your student is working on my math homework for more than 60 minutes and they are not getting a lot accomplished, please ask them to stop doing the homework and come see me to get some clarification on the assignment and some extra help.
Please send me a note or an email saying they were working on the assignment for over 60 minutes and not getting far, and they will not be penalized for not getting it done on time. (I would like to see the work they did complete in the time they were working on it to better understand where we need to focus our attention.)
Classwork and Homework are tracked in Powerschool
Retake Policy:
If your student does not get a 3 or higher on any assessment they can try again on a reassessment.
Steps to a reassessment:
1) If necessary complete any missing or incomplete work from the unit that was assessed.
2) Correct the problems marked wrong from the assessment on the test correction sheet. The corrections must be done with all the work shone on the test correction page or a separate sheet of paper stapled to the assessment. An explanation of what went wrong and what you did to fix it will help me understand your thinking. Write in complete sentences and complete thoughts, the better detail how you found your mistake and what you did to fix it, will show me you truly understand. Do not erase the original work and re-do it on the test. Hand this in first so I can get an idea of what we need to work on for a reassessment.
3) Meet with me to get some support and assignments you need to finish to be able to do a reassessment.
4) If assigned, complete the guided practice to show you learned the material.
5) Turn in your work and schedule a time during Student support, W.I.N., Flex, or after school to do a retake of the assessment.
