By: Natalie Vega (November 12, 2019)

Robert Stone, also known as Jake, is a Senior here at Kearny High. (As a kid growing up, his mom would always call out his name and since both him and his father have the same name, they would both answer. One day his mom called him Jake and it just stuck.) Robert is currently 17-years-old and will turn 18 in April. He has many nationalities including being Polish, German, Hungarian, Russian, Irish, and Lithuanian. Robert has been part of the Kearny Boys Crew Team since his Sophomore year and he really loves rowing. He has many other hobbies such as playing pool, hunting, fishing, travelling, and especially driving. If you know him, you would know that he really loves cars. Anything car related is his passion. When he grows up, Robert wants to become a Port Authority police officer and a volunteer fireman. This shows his caring attitude and his desire to help others.

Emily Cepin

By: Karla Santamaria (October 29, 2019)

Emily is a junior at KHS and quite a scholar. She is currently taking two AP courses and is participating in the Bergen Community College Program where she hopes to earn an associate’s degree prior to graduation. Emily is a book lover and adores reading. Her absolute favorite is the Harry Potter series. Emily loves the series so much that she claims choosing one favorite character is “honestly so tough!” She essentially chose Hermione as her favorite character due to her growth throughout the series. As for her favorite book, she is torn between The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Half Blood Prince.

Aside from a book nerd, Emily is also a KHS athlete. Emily has been a part of the swim team since freshman year. Emily’s father taught her when she was little and she always enjoyed the sport itself. She took a few classes at the YMCA. She loves to swim almost as much as she loves books: “I just really enjoy being in the water.” Emily also said she loves the swim team because her teammates are amazing and will always support each other. To wrap up, Emily left with some fun facts about herself: her favorite color is purple and her lucky number is 8. Catch Emily around KHS!

Maryom Rahman

By: Natalie Vega (October 22, 2019)

Maryom Rahman is in her Junior year here at Kearny High. Just recently this summer she got an internship at NJIT where she learned a lot about chemical engineering and other sciences. This internship took place between the months of July and August. When Maryom applied for the internship she realized that she liked it so much that she wanted to stay longer. During her internship, Maryom was present when people from the Society of Electric Chemical Engineer wrote a paper discussing biosensors, which is a device that is used for the detection of a chemical substance and identifying DNA. This paper also includes the idea of DNA hybridization, which is used to determine the genetic distance between two organisms which is indeed crucial to society if you want to detect RNA. She was amongst a few people who were able to edit the paper that will most likely be published in the next year. This is a great feat for Maryom to be able to edit the paper. When asked about why she decided to apply for this internship, she claimed, “I wanted to know about chemical engineering and whether it is the right path that I want to take. I still don’t know, but I found it very interesting.”

Sarah Pimentel

By: Karla Santamaria (September 28, 2019)

Sarah is a junior at KHS and was delighted to share some facts for her interview! She prefers black as her main favorite color, but she does like other dark colors as well, like dark and navy blue. Her hobbies include reading and crafting. She loves to knit and crochet. As for reading, Sarah enjoys reading fanfiction. She likes to switch her fandoms from time to time; she was reading some Stanger Things content last week but switched to Fairy Tail. Crossovers are one of her favorite things.

While Sarah does not participate in any clubs or sports in school, she does Jiu-Jitsu outside of school. Jiu-Jitsu is a type of martial arts; it is Brazilian and Japanese mixed. Jiu-Jitsu is less technical than judo and modifies to one’s height and strength. Sarah knows how to choke people and break arms, so don’t get her mad. Her favorite technique is called the bow and arrow choke.

Sarah was kind enough to share a picture with the Kearnian. Notice the book she is holding written by Mr. Adamski, a history teacher at KHS.
