SWOT Analysis
Strengths
The research supports that there is a lack of reporting of elder abuse amongst healthcare practitioners.
The literature supports the need for healthcare practitioners to be trained in how to report elder abuse.
The candidate has created strong ties within the AOTA within the past year and has a relationship with the Director of Communications and Publications because of her role as associate editor for the OT Student Pulse newsletter.
The candidate has experience in co authoring a publication in the SIS Quarterly Practice Connection.
Weaknesses
The candidate needs to improve her ability to articulate the need for OT practitioners and students to address and report elder abuse.
The candidate has no experience with instructional design or platforms like Articulate 360
The candidate has no clinical experience which may have added to the application portion of the CE course
A limited subscription service to Articulate 360 led to limited features
Platforms (storyline and rise 360) at times did not interface well with each other, limiting interactive components
Opportunities
There are currently only two pieces of information related to elder abuse on AOTA’s website. One broadly discusses compliance issues and the second is a small article written by a student in the OT Student Pulse Newsletter.
There are currently no CE courses on AOTA’s website on the topic of elder abuse.
Needs assessment revealed that OTPs and students recommend developing an educational module or CE course on elder abuse to improve knowledge and awareness.
Threats
There was a potential that I will not be accepted to the doctoral capstone experience at the AOTA headquarters.
There was also the potential that AOTA may discuss changing the topic completely.
The possibility that AOTA already is in the process of creating materials addressing elder abuse.
Other companies developing CE courses on elder abuse that will compete with the one I publish through AOTA.
