Browne was the daughter of Mary Taylor Lee and Lawrence Johnson Lee without siblings, but unfortunately Browne's mother passed away when she was just two years old. Instead her father, a railway postal clerk, and stepmother, Lottie Lee, a school teacher raised her.

Marjorie Lee Browne had a good education and career. Browne went to Howard University. Browne became a member at Wiley College, in Marshall,Texas, between 1942 and 1945.Then in 1947 Browne had became a teacher fellow at the University of Michigan. Later between 1952 and 1953 Browne won a fellowship from the Ford Foundation.
