NATIONAL ASSESSMENT OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRESS (NAEP)

MRHS 2021-2022 NAEP TESTING

*More information coming soon*

WHAT IS NAEP?

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the largest continuing and nationally representative assessment of what our nation’s students know and can do in various subjects such as mathematics, reading, science, and writing, as well as civics, geography, U.S. history, and technology and engineering literacy.

NAEP is considered the gold standard of assessments because of its high technical quality. From developing frameworks and questions to the reporting of results, NAEP represents the best thinking of assessment and content specialists, state education staff, and teachers from around the nation.

MRHS and NAEP Participation

NAEP will administer mathematics, reading, and science pilot assessments on tablets to a sample of twelfth grade students in the Spring of 2020. Science pilot assessments will include hands-on tasks where students use materials and laboratory equipment to perform actual science experiments.

Approximately 50 students from MRHS will be selected to participate, but that number will vary, depending on the campus’s fall 2019 student enrollment.

Each student will be assessed in only one subject. Students will spend approximately 120 minutes completing the assessment, including transition time, directions, and completion of a survey questionnaire. The questionnaire aims to get a better understanding of students’ educational experiences and opportunities to learn both inside and outside of the classroom.

Does NAEP replace the state tests that my child takes every year?

No. Most state tests measure student performance using the state's own curriculum standards (i.e., what the state considers important for its students to know). State tests enable the comparison of results over time within the state, but because state tests are created according to each state's individual curriculum standards, they do not allow comparisons of results with other states or the nation.

NAEP asks the same questions and is administered in the same way in every state nationwide, providing a common measure of student progress and making comparisons between states possible. NAEP helps states answer such questions as:

How does the performance of students in my state compare with the performance of students in states with similar resources or demographics?

How does my state's performance compare with the nation's?

Are my state's gains in student performance keeping up with the pace of improvement in other states?

While the two assessment types differ in substantial ways, state tests and NAEP work together to give educators and policymakers a comprehensive picture of student performance.
