Welcome to Kaplan's Real Estate Licensing Program. This how-to guide was created to assist you in navigating your licensing study program and preparing you for the state licensing exam.
Beginning the week of October 14, 2024, we are implementing an update to your program:
Exam Prep: National Laws (additional time for Broker Scenario questions)
These live online classes are held every other Saturday. Starting on 10/19 they will be held from 10 am - 3 pm CT. The last hour of the course will focus on broker scenario questions.
LEARN Math (additional time)
Since Math can be a challenging subject, we’ve added 30 minutes to our LEARN Math sessions. Sessions meet every other Friday from 7:00 - 8:30 pm CT.
LEARN TX (new category in the Community Forum)
A new category for Texas students has been added to the Real Estate Student Community! Visit the community to connect with fellow students, ask questions, and explore state-specific topics.
At Kaplan Real Estate Education, we are always striving to provide you with the most up-to-date and exam-focused content and programs available. Your success is our mission! We have created this course syllabus as a roadmap for your success.
Reading your course syllabus is essential for setting yourself up for success in the program. It provides clarity on expectations, guidelines, important attendance policies, and course structure. It allows you to manage your time effectively and perform to the best of your abilities.
Studies have shown that repetitive learning significantly increases the memory performance for detailed and associative information. With this in mind, our LEARN and Exam Prep sessions are designed so you can decide when you want/need the information. You may choose to preview the information you are about to study or review the information you just learned in your online course. Choose the stream that works best for your schedule!
Verify your correct Legal Name and your personal information is correct (as necessary for your state)
Please verify that you have registered using your full legal name, as it appears on your government-issued ID, as well as the correct personal information. This will ensure the accuracy of your certificates of completion upon passing your final exam(s).
If you did not register using your full legal name, or your personal information needs to be corrected, please get in touch with Customer Support PRIOR to taking your final exams and applying for your state exam.
If the name on your Kaplan certificate and photo ID do not align, the testing provider will prohibit you from taking the examination. Failure to set this up correctly may result in applications being flagged as incomplete and subsequently lost in the system.
All students will have six months to complete their course from the date of purchase.
Mandatory Online Component
Each licensing course includes a mandatory online component as part of your coursework in the LMS. The online component tracks your progress and mastery of the subject matter. You must complete all textbook reading assignments, interactive exercises, and practice quizzes within each unit before you can progress to the unit exam. Per TREC requirements, you must score 100% on the unit exam before progressing to the next unit within the same course. If you do not score 100% on the unit exam, additional questions will be presented until a score of 100% is met.
Proctored Exams
Once all units within a course have been completed in the online component, you will be eligible to take your online Proctored Final Exam. All course final exams MUST be proctored. There are two options available for proctoring.
You may arrange your own third-party proctor to take your Kaplan online final exam.
Kaplan can proctor your online final exam virtually. To schedule a Kaplan proctored exam, please visit the self-enrollment page upon completion of your course (including completion of your course online component) and register, here.
Please refer to the Principles of Real Estate I - Course 1 dropdown in your course syllabus for detailed instructions outlining the proctoring requirements.

You may take your education, apply for a license, and receive an inactive Sales Agent license without a sponsoring broker.
File your application and fees with the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC)
After completing the required 180 hours of licensing education, submit your application and fees via TREC's Online Services, here. Don't forget to include your certificates of completion from Kaplan.
Once all the application requirements have been met, TREC will send examinee candidates an eligibility letter which includes a TREC ID number that will be required to register to take the licensing exam with the testing provider, Pearson VUE.
You must successfully pass the exam within 1 year of the date the application is submitted or the application and fees will expire.
Note: All forms can be downloaded at www.trec.texas.gov or you may complete this process online.
Active or inactive initial license?
You will need to decide if you wish to receive an active or inactive license.
To apply for an active license to practice real estate, include with your initial submission the Sales Agent Sponsorship Form-1 form signed by a licensed Texas real estate broker.
To apply for an inactive license, submit only the Inactive Salesperson Application forms then submit the Sponsorship form once you have determined your status.
Get Your Fingerprints Taken and Pass Your Background Check
Any person applying for a license with TREC must provide fingerprints for a criminal background check. See TREC's website for fingerprinting specifics, here.
Follow TREC's instructions on how to submit your fingerprints for review.
A license will not be issued if the background check has not been passed.
Prepare for the Licensing Exam
The Texas licensing exam is administered by a third-party testing provider, Pearson VUE.
To pass, you will need a score of 70% or higher.
While waiting to receive your eligibility letter from TREC, which may take up to four weeks, begin preparing for the state exam.
