Numeracy
Exploring Shapes Through Play
Understanding shapes is a vital part of early numeracy, helping learners build spatial awareness and logical thinking. As part of our topic on different shapes, learners explored 2D shapes using shaving foam, origami paper, pencils and markers.
They used shaving foam to trace and form shapes with their fingers, then combined different shapes—like triangles and square. Using origami paper and drawing tools, they further explored how shapes come together to form new ones.
This interactive activity supported the development of fine motor skills, creativity, and shape recognition, while also encouraging teamwork and communication. It gave learners a strong foundation in geometry through play-based, hands-on learning.
Language and Literacy
Fry Sight Words
Sight words are a key part of early reading, helping children recognize common words quickly and with ease. In this fun and engaging literacy activity, learners picked paper eggs printed with sight words, read them aloud and placed them in a pretend pan to “flip.”
The playful setup made learning exciting and engaging. It helped build sight word recognition, reading fluency, and confidence, while also encouraging participation, turn-taking, and language development.
In conclusion, “frying” sight word eggs turned reading into a fun, hands-on experience that supported essential literacy skills in a joyful way.
Let’s Explore: Knowing Yourself – My Body
Understanding oneself is an important part of early learning. Under the topic “Knowing Yourself – Body Parts,” learners explored the names and functions of different body parts, helping them build self-awareness and confidence.
As part of this, learners took part in a "Show and Tell" activity where they talked about their favourite body part. Some spoke about their hands for drawing, eyes for seeing, or nose for breathing. Each child shared why they liked that body part and what it helps them do, using actions or props to support their explanation.
This activity supported language development, confidence, and body awareness. It also helped build listening skills, vocabulary, and encouraged self-expression in a fun and supportive environment.
In conclusion, the "Show and Tell" helped learners connect personally with the topic while developing important communication and social skills.
Discovering Our Senses
Learners engaged in a hands-on sensory table activity where they explored various objects—such as soft fabrics, scented items, musical instruments, and tasting samples—and identified which sense and body part each item related to.
They participated with excitement and curiosity, using their senses to touch, smell, see, hear, and taste. This interactive experience supported the development of sensory awareness, vocabulary, critical thinking, and confidence in self-expression.
Overall, the sensory table offered a fun and meaningful way for children to explore and understand the five senses through active learning.
Atelier
Exploration: Flower Frame Fun
This week in our Atelier, EY2 learners had a wonderful hands-on experience creating flower frames using real flowers and paper plates! As part of our ongoing exploration of nature and biodiversity, the children were invited to observe and handle a variety of real flowers, appreciating their colors, textures, and scents.
Using paper plates with a sticky surface, the children carefully selected and placed flowers to create their very own natural frames. This activity encouraged fine motor skills, decision-making, and creativity, while also fostering a deeper connection to the natural world.
Through this experience, learners began to understand the importance of plants in our environment and how different flowers contribute to biodiversity. It was a beautiful blend of artistic expression and environmental awareness—an engaging way to bring nature into our learning space!
ART
What Colour is Friendship?
In this heartwarming art session, EY2 learners explored the question: “What colour is friendship?” Through painting and color mixing, the children expressed their feelings about friendship using the colors that felt right to them. Some chose warm colors like red and yellow for kindness and joy, while others used cool tones like blue and green to show calm and care.
This activity encouraged emotional expression, creativity, and meaningful conversations about what it means to be a friend—all through the beautiful language of color!
Sports
Physical activity is vital for young children’s growth and development. Under the topic Body Movement, learners explored movements like twisting, jumping, raising, and lifting through fun games and guided routines.
They actively participated, moving with energy and enthusiasm while following instructions. These exercises helped improve balance, coordination, strength, and spatial awareness, while also promoting discipline and team spirit.
In conclusion, the activity supported healthy habits and essential physical skills in an enjoyable, engaging way.
Horticulture
Horticulture opens a window into the natural world, encouraging learners to explore and appreciate plant life. In our topic "Learning about different plants", children observed a variety of plants, noticing differences in leaf shapes, colors, and textures.
They then drew what they observed, carefully capturing the details through illustrations. This activity sparked curiosity and encouraged close observation, creativity, and reflection. Learners were fully engaged—asking questions, sharing insights, and expressing themselves through art.
Through this hands-on experience, they developed essential skills such as scientific observation, fine motor control, language development, and environmental awareness. It was a meaningful way to connect with nature while nurturing creativity, focus and a sense of responsibility.
