A wall installation of woven red rubber bands.
Created in response to the theme of SIXTY, “Ikat" (to tie or to bind in English) is a wall installation that weaves everyday red rubber bands into a tapestry, reflecting on age, place, and shared memory. Ever-present in Singaporean daily life, these rubber bands serve as humble connectors such as tying up food packets, holding together documents, binding hair, or forming the core of childhood games like Zero Point.
This work draws on these deeply local associations to explore small and often overlooked objects carry meaning across generations. Celebrating Singapore’s 60th birthday, “Ikat” serves as a metaphor for the resilience and adaptability of our nation. Our people are not bound by uniformity, but by the invisible threads of lived experiences, cultural memory, and everyday rituals. The
red color of the rubber bands is a nod to prosperity and shared identity, while the act of weaving embodies interconnection and the passage of time.
