Waka Ama

2019 was yet another successful year for Waka Ama at Kaipara College. We managed to win a number of trophies at the Auckland Secondary Schools which put us in good stead for the Secondary School Nationals which was to follow. All teams performed exceptionally well with our overall results improving yet again. All teams managed to make championship finals, placing them in the top eight in New Zealand. On two occasions these opportunities were converted into medals. With one Silver and one Gold. The Gold came from our Under 19 Boys who won the blue ribbon event for the second year in a row.

First XV

We had a big squad this year and a lot of goals were set and achieved. This was a group of very talented young men, good role models with a high work ethic. A massive thank you to our generous sponsors who enabled us to purchase suits for the team; this was the first time at Kaipara College. After playing their first game, the boys were given their shirts & pants. After five games they were presented with their tie, and after ten games they had earned their blazer. The new culture the team embraced this year will hopefully set the path for years to come. With the culture that the boys embraced and the community getting in behind the team, the results followed. Going one step better in 2019 making the 1B final and being ahead on the scoreboard for 78min. This team has made huge steps in a positive direction, which will continue in 2020 as we make the step up to contest the North Harbour 1A competition for the 1st time in 15 years next year.

First XI Football

We have a mixed bag of results this season and barring a few moments of misfortune, the boys could have seen themselves finish much higher up the table. In saying that, with 5 boys completely new to football, they put in a great shift during the season. The senior lads really stepped up and I have rarely been able to fault the work ethic and attitude that all the boys have put in throughout the season. I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents for your efforts this year, in particular Dave Stenning and Shirley Brown. Dave for your officiating throughout the season, and Shirley, we wouldn’t be a team without you- I certainly would have been a shambles! So thank you very much.

The season of 2019 saw Kaipara College fielding two girls’ soccer teams in the North Harbour Competition. The First XI team saw several new players to the game of soccer who soon learnt the fundamental differences between playing soccer and playing netball! The girls finished fifth out of ten teams. The girls played as a team and supported each other, giving positive encouragement throughout the season. Every player, whether new to soccer or veteran, learned a lot within the games and during many coaching sessions. Some highlights and memories from the 2019 season include Kaitlin’s fabulous goalie and game saving skills. Tia’s first goal was unfortunately in the wrong goal. Kendrah’s long distance strikes gained us some spectacular goals and cheering from the sideline! The amazing wingers, Holly and Natalie, outsmarted the opposition team’s set moves. Aria and Jessi demonstrated their header skills during the games and Amy T defended like a professional. Jess Smith covered almost every inch of the pitch every game and Crystal displayed some fancy footwork on attack. Superb goals were scored by Wilson, Indiya and Grace. And our solid defence partnership from Shannon and Natalie lead to a great season, ladies... Bring on 2020!

This photo was taken at the North Island Titles competition in Tauranga. There were over three hundred competitors and the terrain was wet which made it tough. Securing second place was a struggle but rewarding.

Equestrian

Charlotte Treneary came 17th in the New Zealand Three Day Event CCN1* Championships held May 9-12. As with all equestrian events at this level, Charlotte was competing against adults including former NZ international representatives and her pony Kabo Pongo was the smallest in the competition.

In April Charlotte Treneary competed at the Matamata Horse Trials winning the OJZ Under 21 CCN 80cm on Mirrabella Piper and coming second in Stronghold CCN105cm. She is photographed here with Mirrabella Piper receiving her prizes from the sponsors. As part of her prize haul, Charlotte also won a lesson with NZ international Samantha Lissington.

Keeva McCambridge ended the season on a high winning the Junior Rider class & coming 9th in the Rookie Rider Trainer Championship at the Show Jumping Waitemata Grand Prix Show. She is pictured here on her mount Hey There Delilah HH. Keeva received two lessons with one of NZ's top coachs, Jill Ullrich, as part of her prize for placing in the Trainers Championship.

The Winter Series began with the first competition having over 150 entries in June. This was an open competition and Kaipara featured in the winners circle all day. Highlights were Mikayla Chalmers winning the Pony 1.10cm & 2nd in the 1.05cm, Charlotte Treneary winning the Horse 1.05cm & 1.00cm and in the Pony 95-100cm. We had Stacey Thompson, Daisy Kerton & Mikayla Chalmers all placing next to each other! Pictured is Mikayla Chalmers on her pony SLC Golden Phoenix.

Senior Netball

2019 SNR 1 Netball was another amazing year. We started the season with an eight day Gold Coast tour to Australia. We were able to bond as a team and gain some valuable pre-season court time playing some tough Australian and Fijian school teams. We came third overall. We returned to NZ and entered straight into our North Harbour Competition. We had an outstanding start and ended up in the number one position after the first round. Unfortunately, in the last five weeks of the second round we were hammered with five major injuries and finished the 2019 season in fifth place overall which was disappointing because it didn't reflect the talent and capabilities of the squad.

At UNISS, we entered into B grade for the first time and ended up finishing eighth, narrowly missing out by one game to be promoted into A grade. The bonus is that we have a very young and talented team and will only lose one player next year. So going into next year, we are looking to continue building on strengthening the depth of our squad and develop all players to improve in skill and experience over the next few years.
