"North Star to Nanook"

The Vision and Mission of "North Star to Nanook"

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District (FNSBSD) is excited to partner with the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) in the “North Star To Nanook ~ An Early Campus Experience”, a new effort to promote early awareness of college opportunities for elementary students enrolled in Title I schools, by providing them with access to our own local university campus. Through this project, 3rd and 4th grade students from local schools will gain exposure to the UAF campus through field trip extensions and targeted tours hosted by UAF Student Ambassadors. This project is a combined effort between UAF and FNSBSD. Our shared goal is to encourage students to dream big and envision themselves on a post-secondary campus, here or anywhere.

Who is it for, and how does it work?

Who: 3rd and 4th grade students at Title I Schools

What: A campus experience to build awareness, familiarity and connections.

When: As an "add-on" to an already planned field trip or visit to UAF or as a "stand alone" experience.

Where: At the UAF campus, including access to departments, sample dorm rooms or the Wood Center.

How: Through a combined effort between FNSBSD, Federal Programs and UAF, the transportation and logistics are being worked out. All a teacher has to do is fill out the Request a Visit Form and let UAF know when they hope to visit.
