I believe in creating a classroom community, using the Responsive Classroom and Culturally Responsive model. All students are taught the skills to be responsible, respectful, caring, and ready to learn. Students need to feel they are in a safe environment and understand that what they have to say is important. During the first six weeks of school this is our focus.
Collaboration opportunities between the students during morning meeting, math, language arts and content are important. Students in this age group enjoy social talk, and use rapidly expanding vocabularies. They are active and may not always remember what they have heard because they have so many ideas of their own to share. Wanting to work in collaborative groups is a common social and emotional behavior for this age of students. Learning is social, and peer interaction helps extend learning. Researched based Responsive Classroom principles state the greatest cognitive growth occurs through social interaction. Also learning partnerships between teacher -parent -student is vital. My personal goal is to create more opportunities for this partnership, and I will be asking for feedback in the future to help guide me.
The five C's that I want to integrate into my instruction and technology plans are: Creativity, Compassion, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking Skills.
